BIM Software

BIM SOFTWARE

BIM Software are computer programs that allow us to make models in accordance with the BIM procedure. BIM Software can be used for walls, floors, ventilation pipes, etc. They allow us to produce objects in 3D. BIM Software are a developed form of Computer Aided Design (CAD) software, and they can all produce the IFC format, which is very important because this is a format used for communication between IFC BIM Software. These programs must be able to import and export the IFC format.

IFC also greatly supports the BIM system by providing the information and models needed for the management of projects.

Models created using BIM Software are collected within a database representing a single project. If a change is made in one part of the project, that change will be reflected in other parts of the project which are affected. This feature facilitates the workflow and where problems arise, solutions are provided to all parts of the organization immediately, saving time.

These programs, whose interfaces provide convenience for the user, also allow stakeholders working on a construction project to make different models.

Programs that are frequently used and popular in the field of BIM are given below with their descriptions.

1) Allplan

Allplan, a sofware developed by the German company Nemetschek, founded in 1963, is a piece of software used widely in the BIM system. It can convert extensions such as PDF, DXF, DWG, IFC, DGN, 3D-PDF, CINEMA 4D, SketchUp, OBJ, Rhino, STL, VRML, XMl, to suitable formats.

Allplan was developed for flexible design, quantity calculation, facade design and detailed analysis. It contributes to the reduction of work times thanks to the ability to see and change both 2D and 3D drawings of projects and to provide collaborative working opportunities.

2) ArchiCAD

ArchiCAD, a sofware produced by Graphisoft, a Hungarian company founded in 1984, is one of the oldest BIM Software, first released in 1987. This software, which works in harmony with Macintosh and Windows systems, was the first software to provide users with 2D and 3D drawing opportunities. ArchiCAD has the ability to convert IFC extensions to other suitable formats.

Thanks to the MEP Plugin that can be placed inside ArchiCAD, it provides users with the opportunity to model installations in 3D, as well as perform overlap analysis.

As with other software used in the BIM system, it collects project-related data within a common database, allowing project employees to instantly see the changes made.

3) IdeCAD

IdeCAD, a software suite originating in Turkey, made by a company that has been producing structural and architectural software since 1988, produces solutions for the BIM system.

Although the suite’s software appear to be different from each other, they harmonize quite successfully. Structures drawn in IdeCAD Architectural projects such as land data, columns, walls, axes, beams, floors and voids are also recognized in IdeCAD Structural.

Regularly updated to reflect to changing regulations and laws, IdeCAD provides a great benefit for users of the Structural software in Turkey.

Carcass structural solutions coming out of IdeCAD Structural can be made compatible with IdeCAD Architectural with a single command. It provides the opportunity to determine the quantity of iron and concrete in detail according to the solutions created in IdeCAD Structural.

4) Navisworks

Navisworks, a BIM Software purchased by the UK-based Autodesk company in 2007, combines several BIM models in the same environment, enabling conflict control and job planning to be demonstrated as a video.

This increases the predictability of the project by enabling the project financers to simulate the modeled structure over time. It is easy to watch the construction stages in the videos it exports.

Several BIM models can be fine-tuned and given parameters during registration. It is also possible to overlay 3D models with point clouds.

5) Revit

The Revit software was initially developed by Charles River Software in Massachusetts, which was founded in 1997, and the first version of the software was released in 1999. Three years after the Revit software was released, it was acquired by Autodesk.

Working in harmony with Macintosh and Windows operating systems, Autodesk Revit can work with extensions such as IFC, DWG, DXF, DGN, SAT and SKP. With Revit, it is possible to model architecture, structure, MEP, ventilation systems and electrical elements.

6) Tekla

This is a civil engineering software created by the American company Trimble, which was founded in 1978.

While the software is aimed at structural engineers, it can be used for modeling wood, steel, reinforced concrete or mixed structures. All the details of the building are modeled in 3D and the assembly and production drawings are obtained from this model.

Tekla can do most of the detailing automatically and could be described as a developed version of the Xsteel software, which will be known by those working in this sector. The latest version of Tekla was released in 2021 with the name Tekla Structures Version 2021.
